Preservation in Progress
 Stimulus Funds Awarded to 56 Historic Properties
Fifty-six historic Montana buildings made the top of the list to receive a grand total of $3.5 million in historic preservation grant funds authorized under the 2009 Montana Legislature’s House Bill 645, which allocated federal Reinvestment and Recovery Act funds. All across the state, these funds will help stabilize, restore, and rehabilitate a vast array of buildings from schools and courthouses, to theaters, museums, mine buildings, university halls, foundries and more.

Back in March 2009, MPA and a bi-partisan group of enthusiastic legislators lobbied for the HB 645 funds to be spent on for an historic preservation grant program. The effort was successful and by November 2009, more than 120 applicants submitted requests for funds totaling more than $20 million, illuminating the immense need for funding experienced by owners of historic buildings. While these funds are one-time-only funds, MPA hopes to continue to work with legislators and state government officials to someday see a permanent historic preservation grant program.
