Pedaling Toward Preservation

Revitalizing Buildings for Cycle Tourists

Cycle tourism has helped bring new life to rural Ovando.

Cycle tourism has helped bring new life to rural Ovando.

With funds from our friends at the 1772 Foundation, MPA is studying heritage properties along popular bicycling routes and identifying historic buildings that could be repurposed to meet the needs of touring cyclists. We’ll be looking at at-risk properties, and some case studies to create feasibility recommendations for potential bike-related development.

According to 2017 Montana Tourism Industry statistics, cycle tourism contributes a hefty $377 million annually to Montana's economy. With that in mind and with MPA’s 30 years of outreach to rural towns to reinforce economic development through historic preservation, MPA will use our database of threatened properties to overlay those historic properties with major bike routes, connect with communities along the routes, and explore potential to put historic buildings into use to serve the bicycling community.
