The Montana Preservation Alliance once again invites Helena newcomers and long-time residents alike to discover the history of our Queen City in a whole new way. No docents. No schedule. You choose where to go and what to see.
With two different self-guided tours this year, the MPA is offering participants a glimpse into historic buildings in the downtown area and beyond into rural areas of the valley.

What to Bring:
Registration Confirmation Email
Sturdy walking shoes
Map Information: The site map will be emailed to registered participants 24 hours in advance to allow for planning. Physical map pick up begins at 9 a.m. at the MPA Office (44 West 6th Ave, Suite 110, Helena, MT 59601)
Registration: Tour cost is $32. Participants will check in at the MPA
Office to pick up maps & history pamphlet, and receive a hand stamp for site entry.
Tour Hours: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Transportation will be the responsibility of the participants, all roads will be easily accessible, and parking will be clearly labeled.
Weather: We have prepared for chilly weather! All roads are easily accessible and
many sites will have snacks and warm beverages.

“What if I can’t we see it all?”
Since first advertising this tour last fall it has been very popular. We want to offer as many people as possible the opportunity to experience Helena in this incredible way but many of the buildings we feature cannot sustain heavy foot traffic. By increasing the number of buildings open we can disperse the crowd allowing each building to be less cramped and more enjoyable for everyone. We appreciate your understanding.
“Will I need proof of registration?”
Please bring your confirmation email with you at the time of registration. If you need another copy, call our office and they will send it to you again.
“Do I need my confiramtion email to access buildings?”
These are used solely for the purpose of counting participants. Your hand stamp and map will grant you access to any of the marked buildings.
“Without a tour guide how will I learn?”
Each site will have a knowledgeable owner, local historian, or volunteer. The map will also come with an accompanying pamphlet detailing the history of each site, but you are encouraged to ask questions and seek answers on your own!
“Are children allowed to participate?”
Yes, children over the age of six are welcome (as are infants). We do ask that they are with a responsible adult at all times. Historic buildings can be a risk to children and children can be a risk to them. These spaces often have low railings, narrow steps, and other potentially risky designs, so please keep an eye on your little ones! For special ticket pricing please visit the MPA Office.
“Can I recommend a building for next year?”
Yes! We will send a survey to all tour-goers allowing them to recommend buildings for next years tour. We are always looking for new suggestions and several buildings from last years survey were included in this years tour.
