The Montana Preservation Alliance once again invites Helena newcomers and long-time residents alike to discover the history of our Queen City in a whole new way. No docents. No schedule. You choose where to go and what to see.
With two different self-guided tours this year, the MPA is offering participants a glimpse into historic buildings in the downtown area and beyond into rural areas of the valley.

What to Bring: You will need your proof of registration (emailed to you at the time of purchase), we also recommend preparing for the weather.
Map Information: The site map will be mailed to registered participants 24 hours in advance to allow for route planning. Physical map pick up begins at 9 a.m. at the Baxendale Schoolhouse (located between the Archie Bray Foundation and Head Ln)
Registration: Participants will sign in, pick up maps, and receive a hand stamp for site
entry. Remember! There will not be time to see every location listed on the map. We
strongly encourage planning your day accordingly.
Tour Hours: 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Transportation will be the responsibility of the participants, all roads will be easily accessible unless
otherwise marked on the map. Parking will also be clearly labeled.

Participants collect a map & history pamphlet at either the Montana Club or the
Myrna Loy Center.
The Montana Club will be open early for participants to explore and the new Montana Preservation Alliance office will have light appetizers!
Tour Hours: 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The tour is designed to be completed on foot, but vehicle transport will enable participant to visit more locations. A list of parking options will be provided at map pick-up for participants wishing to drive.
Remember! There might not be time to see every location listed on the map.

“Why can’t we see it all?”
Since first advertising this tour last fall it has been very popular. We want to offer as many people as possible the opportunity to experience Helena in this incredible way but many of the buildings we feature cannot sustain heavy foot traffic. By increasing the number of buildings open we can disperse the crowd allowing each building to be less cramped and more enjoyable for everyone. We appreciate your understanding.
“Why have I not received a paper ticket?”
In an effort to be eco-friendly and to de-clutter our tour we have limited the sale of paper tickets. Once you have purchased your ticket online you will receive an email confirmation and be added to our list of participants. Don’t worry! You’re all paid up and we know you’re excited!
“Do I need my ticket to access buildings?”
The tickets are used solely for the purpose of counting participants. Your map will grant you access to any of the marked buildings.
“Without a tour guide how will I learn?”
The map will come with an accompanying pamphlet detailing the history of each site, but you are encouraged to ask questions and seek answers on your own!
“Are children allowed to participate?”
Yes, children over the age of six are welcome (as are infants). We do ask that they are with a responsible adult at all times. Historic buildings can be a risk to children and children can be a risk to them. These spaces often have low railings, narrow steps, and other potentially risky designs, so please keep an eye on your little ones! For special ticket pricing please visit the MPA Office.
“Can I recommend a building for next year?”
Yes! We will send a survey to all tour-goers allowing them to recommend buildings for next years tour. We are always looking for new suggestions and several buildings from last years survey were included in this years tour.
